TERRA CEIA, Manatee County, Fla., Sept. 30, 2026 — A crash with injuries closed two northbound lanes of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Tuesday, September 29, near the Terra Ceia community, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The roadway has since reopened.
The crash happened on Interstate 275 along the Sunshine Skyway span in Manatee County. Two left northbound lanes were shut down as crews worked the scene, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
One left lane on the southbound side was also blocked temporarily to allow emergency vehicles to reach the crash. Details on how many vehicles were involved and the extent of any injuries were not released.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not said what led to the crash. The lanes have since been cleared, and traffic has returned to normal.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.
Car Crashes on Florida Bridges, by the Numbers
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. That figure covers all kinds of roadways, but it points to something bridges share with ordinary highways: most crashes there are not caused by the structure itself; they happen for the same reasons crashes happen anywhere, following too closely, sudden lane changes, or a moment of inattention.
Bridges like the Sunshine Skyway add a few extra factors. Lanes narrow, shoulders shrink or disappear, and wind gusts off open water can push a vehicle off its line. When a crash does happen in one of those lanes, there is often nowhere for traffic to go, which is why even a single-vehicle crash can back up both directions for miles.
That combination, a high volume of daily crossings and limited room to maneuver, is part of why state transportation agencies track bridge crashes separately from general roadway data and often respond with lane closures rather than trying to keep traffic moving past the scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is distracted driving considered so risky?
Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds to check your phone or an app means traveling a long distance without looking at anything ahead. On a bridge with narrow lanes and no shoulder, that gap in attention leaves little time to react to slowing traffic.
How much do weather and road conditions factor into crashes like this?
Rain, wind, and glare all reduce a driver's control, especially on elevated spans where crosswinds are stronger than on ground-level roads. Wet pavement also increases stopping distances, which matters more when lanes are tight.
What should someone do right after a car accident?
Move to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and exchange information with anyone else involved. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical check is worth doing since some injuries, like whiplash, do not show symptoms right away.
What to Do After a Car Crash in Terra Ceia, Florida
If you're involved in a crash in the Terra Ceia area, stay as far from moving traffic as you safely can and turn on hazard lights while waiting for help. Call 911 even for a minor-seeming collision, since a police report and a medical evaluation both matter later, whether for insurance or for catching an injury that hasn't shown symptoms yet.
Get contact and insurance information from anyone else involved, and take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so. Afterward, follow up with a doctor if anything feels off; soreness and stiffness from a crash can take a day or two to appear.
