Why Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Often Lead to Severe Harm
Wrong-way crashes on highways are often associated with serious or fatal outcomes due to the high speeds involved. Vehicles traveling in opposite directions can close the distance within seconds, leaving drivers with little time to react. Even modern safety systems may not prevent severe injury in head-on collisions at highway speeds.
After a major highway collision, crews often review roadway markings, visibility, weather, and vehicle movement before the crash. Tire marks, traffic camera footage, and witness statements may also help explain how a vehicle entered opposing lanes. In some cases, roadway barriers or center divides can affect the extent of damage when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic. Medical findings and vehicle damage patterns are also commonly examined to help piece together what happened before the roadway reopened.
