THOMPSON, Windham County, Conn., Oct. 4, 2026 — A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon, October 3, in a crash with a car on Wagher Road, according to the Thompson Fire Department. The rider was flown to a hospital by helicopter.

Thompson Fire Department crews were called to 83 Wagher Road shortly after 1:20 p.m. for a report of a car versus motorcycle crash with a serious leg injury, the department said. Arriving units found the motorcyclist had suffered an open fracture of the leg and a broken arm, according to the report.

Given the severity of the injuries, crews requested a medical helicopter. A UMass Life Flight helicopter responded and transported the motorcyclist to a hospital, the fire department said. Mutual aid crews, including an engine and ambulance from Dudley and an engine from Webster, assisted by setting up a landing zone for the aircraft.

No further details on the motorcyclist's condition or the circumstances of the crash have been released. The incident remains under investigation.

We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk in Car Versus Motorcycle Crashes

Motorcyclists carry almost all the physical risk when a car and a motorcycle collide. A car's frame and airbags absorb much of a crash's energy for its occupants, but a rider has only a helmet and protective gear between themselves and the road or the other vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2023. Riders on rural roads face particular exposure because higher speeds and longer emergency response times can turn a survivable injury into a fatal one.

Age plays a role too. Younger riders with less experience reading traffic and judging other drivers' movements show up at higher rates in crash data, while older riders are more likely to suffer severe injury from the same impact because bones and tissue recover less easily with age. Visibility is another factor: a motorcycle's smaller profile makes it easier for a driver turning left or pulling out of a side road to miss seeing it in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does road surface affect how safe a motorcycle ride is?

Yes. Gravel, wet pavement, potholes, and painted lane markings all reduce a motorcycle's traction far more than they affect a car, making road condition a bigger factor in rider safety.

What gear actually reduces injury in a motorcycle crash?

A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of head, limb, and road-rash injuries in a crash.

What typically causes car versus motorcycle crashes?

Common factors include a driver failing to see or yield to a motorcycle, left-turn collisions at intersections, speeding, and distracted driving.

Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than other crashes?

Riders lack the structural protection a car provides, so even a lower-speed impact can cause fractures or head injuries that a car occupant might walk away from.
