Knoxville, TN (June 23, 2026) – Three people died on Monday morning, June 22, after a pedestrian-involved accident on North Broadway at Cecil Avenue. The wreck happened around 8:30 a.m. near the First Creek Greenway.
Officials said a single vehicle was traveling north on North Broadway when it struck a light pole. The vehicle then hit two pedestrians on the east bank sidewalk of First Creek Greenway.
After that, the vehicle veered off the west bank of First Creek and rolled down the embankment several times. The driver and both pedestrians died at the scene.
The cause remains under review as investigators work to determine why the vehicle left its lane. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of all three people who lost their lives.
Why Pedestrian Crashes Near Greenways Can Be Severe
Pedestrian crashes near greenways can be especially serious because people walking nearby have little protection from moving vehicles. Sidewalks and paths are designed to separate pedestrians from traffic, but a vehicle that leaves the road can still create sudden danger.
Roadside features can also affect the outcome. Light poles, slopes, creek banks, and embankments may change a vehicle’s path after the first point of contact. When a vehicle rolls after leaving the pavement, the force can become more severe.
Greenway crossings and nearby streets may include walkers, runners, cyclists, and drivers moving through the same corridor. Clear sight lines, safe speeds, and protected walkways can help reduce risk. Early reports often focus on confirmed deaths, roadway position, and where the vehicle came to rest.
