Ocala, FL (May 20, 2026) – Three people were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a three-vehicle crash involving an ambulance transport van along Interstate 75 in Ocala. The collision happened around 5 p.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 354, according to Ocala Fire Rescue.
Emergency units arriving at the roadway found the American Ambulance transport van overturned on its side following the crash involving two personal vehicles. Before the crews reached the scene, passing motorists helped a patient and two transport workers exit the ambulance safely.
The patient and both transport personnel were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation. No other hurt was reported in connection with the wreck.
The two left-hand northbound lanes of I-75 remained blocked until approximately 6:30 p.m., causing traffic delays throughout the corridor while crews cleared the roadway and removed the damaged vehicles.
Investigators continue examining the circumstances that led to the multi-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening. We are thinking of those hospitalized and wish them a smooth recovery.
Why Overturned Ambulance Crashes Require Special Safety Reviews
Crashes involving ambulances and medical transport vehicles often receive additional review because patients and medical staff may be inside during travel. When a transport van overturns, unsecured equipment and limited movement inside the vehicle can increase the risk of injuries for occupants. Safety restraints and interior vehicle design are commonly examined after such crashes.
Interstate crashes involving multiple vehicles may also create secondary hazards due to blocked travel lanes and sudden traffic slowdowns. Investigators frequently review traffic flow, speed, lane changes, and roadway conditions to better understand how a rollover happened. Emergency transport vehicles face unique challenges because they may travel long distances while carrying patients who require monitoring or medical assistance. In some cases, witness statements and dashboard camera footage can help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the overturn.
