Phoenix, AZ (June 12, 2026) – Three people were hospitalized following a head-on collision involving two vehicles in West Phoenix early Thursday morning.
The accident took place at the intersection of 79th Avenue and Van Buren Street at approximately 2:45 a.m. Preliminary information indicates that a truck traveling west on Van Buren Street crossed into opposing lanes and struck a sedan.
A woman was removed from one of the vehicles by emergency units after becoming trapped inside. Two men were also injured in the crash. All three were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. While initial reports indicated the people involved had critical injuries, police later stated they are expected to survive.
Investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision, though the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review. Investigators are continuing to gather information as they work to determine exactly what led to the roadway encounter. We are keeping those hurt in our thoughts and wishing them strength during their recovery.
Why Head-On Collisions Often Result in Serious Injuries
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of roadway crashes because the force from both vehicles is directed toward each other. Even at moderate speeds, the combined energy involved can cause significant harm to vehicle occupants and extensive damage to the vehicles.
Several factors can contribute to these crashes, including impaired driving, driver fatigue, distraction, medical emergencies, or a vehicle crossing the center line. In many cases, investigators review roadway conditions, vehicle positions, witness statements, and physical evidence to better understand how the sequence of events unfolded. Modern safety features such as airbags, seat belts, and reinforced passenger compartments help reduce the risk of severe injury, but head-on impacts often still result in lengthy medical treatment and recovery due to the forces involved.
