Why Ejection During a Rollover Crash Can Be So Dangerous
Rollover crashes are among the most severe types of traffic collisions because vehicles can overturn multiple times and expose occupants to significant forces. One of the greatest dangers occurs when a person is partially or fully ejected from a vehicle during the sequence.
Seat belts are designed to help keep occupants inside the vehicle and reduce movement during a rollover. People who are ejected face a much higher risk of serious injury because they may strike the roadway, nearby objects, or other vehicles. Even when a person appears able to walk away, injuries may not be immediately visible and can worsen over time. Investigators often review factors such as speed, vehicle stability, roadway conditions, and occupant restraint use when examining rollover crashes.
