What Can Make Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes More Dangerous?
Crashes involving several vehicles can quickly become more serious because drivers often have little time to react after the first impact. On highways and mountain routes, limited visibility around curves or changing traffic speeds may increase the risk of secondary contact between vehicles.
Overturned vehicles can create additional hazards by blocking travel lanes and forcing sudden stops. Towed vehicles may also behave unpredictably if equipment fails or if the vehicle begins to sway during travel. In some situations, debris scattered across the roadway can make it harder for approaching drivers to avoid danger.
Road closures are common after major highway collisions because crews must remove damaged vehicles, clear debris, and inspect the roadway before traffic can safely resume.
