Catawba County, NC (September 9, 2026) – Three people were hurt in a single-vehicle crash early on Monday morning on Old Shelby Road.

The vehicle left the roadway, traveled through a drainage ditch, overturned, and came to rest on its side in a cornfield. Responders were initially told that people might be trapped inside the vehicle.

Responders found three patients and took them for emergency treatment. Two of the patients were flown to hospitals by medical helicopters.

A fourth person was initially believed to be missing, prompting searches with thermal imaging equipment and a fire department drone. Law enforcement later confirmed the person was safe at home.

No information was available about the three patients’ medical conditions. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. We hope all three injured people make a full recovery.

What Can Cause a Vehicle to Leave the Road?

Single-vehicle accidents can occur when a driver loses control due to excessive speed, distraction, impairment, fatigue, or sudden roadway hazards. Sharp turns, wet pavement, debris, and uneven surfaces can also cause a vehicle to leave its intended path. Once a vehicle enters a drainage ditch or other uneven terrain, the risk of overturning can increase.

Seat belts can help keep occupants inside the vehicle during a rollover and reduce the likelihood of severe trauma. Drivers should maintain a safe speed for roadway and weather conditions and remain attentive to changes ahead. Avoiding alcohol and other impairing substances also reduces the risk of losing control. Regular vehicle maintenance, particularly for tires and brakes, can further help drivers maintain control and avoid serious roadway accidents.
