Smyrna, DE (September 7, 2026) — Three people were injured Saturday night, September 5, 2026, after a motorcycle crash in the 4200 block of Hay Point Landing Road near Smyrna, Kent County, according to dispatch records. The motorcycle reportedly struck a guardrail, and a rider was trapped.
The call came in around 9:46 p.m. Extrication was completed by around 10:07 p.m., dispatch information shows.
Of the three patients, one was flown by helicopter and two were taken by ground ambulance, according to dispatch records.
The cause of the wreck was not immediately known, and no further details, including the ages of those hurt or how three people came to need care, have been released. We hope all three people recover fully.
How Do Guardrails Pose a Unique Danger to Motorcyclists?
Guardrails are designed and tested primarily around protecting car occupants, redirecting a vehicle’s body along the rail rather than letting it go off the road entirely. A motorcyclist doesn’t have that same protective shell to redirect, so contact with a guardrail means the rider’s body meets the rail or its support posts directly.
The support posts and end sections of a guardrail create hard, narrow points that weren’t designed with a human body in mind. A car’s side panel can absorb and spread out that kind of contact, but a rider hitting the same point has nothing performing that function, which is part of why guardrail strikes tend to be especially severe for motorcyclists.
Some newer guardrail designs include an added lower rail specifically to help keep a sliding rider from going underneath the main barrier, but this kind of motorcycle-friendly barrier isn’t standard on most roads yet. Riders are generally encouraged to treat any guardrail as a serious hazard if they ever lose control nearby, since standard barriers offer very little in the way of protection built for a motorcycle.
