Honolulu, HI (August 20, 2026) – Three people were injured on Wednesday evening, August 19, after a vehicle struck a tree and traveled down an embankment near the 3600 block of Round Top Drive in the Tantalus area. The crash happened at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Emergency medical personnel treated all three occupants for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
A 20-year-old man was taken to a hospital in serious condition. A 24-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were also hospitalized and were listed in stable condition.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. We hope all three injured people receive care and recover fully.
Why Tree Strikes and Embankments Can Cause Serious Injuries
A vehicle that strikes a tree and then travels down an embankment can expose its occupants to multiple major forces. The first impact may be followed by additional movement, jolts, or contact with uneven ground.
Head, chest, spinal, and limb injuries can occur as occupants are pushed against seat belts, seats, or other parts of the vehicle. The slope itself may also complicate access for medical crews.
Travel speed, restraint use, vehicle position, impact angle, and the steepness of the embankment can all affect injury severity. Even when injuries are not life-threatening, hospital care may be needed to check for fractures, internal trauma, or other problems that are not immediately obvious.
