Roanoke Co., VA (September 3, 2026) – Three people were injured in a residential fire along the 10400 block of Fortune Ridge Road on Tuesday afternoon, September 1.

Responders arrived to find the front of the home heavily involved in flames. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

Three people were taken by ambulance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One patient was later flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center for further evaluation.

Six people, one dog, and one cat were displaced from the home and were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. Another cat remained unaccounted for following the fire. The investigation into how the fire started remains ongoing.

We hope those injured make a full recovery.

Why Residential Fires Can Create Serious Health and Safety Risks

House fires can expose occupants to heat, smoke, and toxic gases within a short period. Smoke inhalation can affect breathing even when burns are not immediately visible, making medical evaluation important after significant exposure.

Fire can also weaken floors, walls, ceilings, and stairways. Damaged structural materials may remain unstable after flames are extinguished, while broken glass, exposed wiring, and hot surfaces can create additional hazards.

The seriousness of fire-related harm can depend on how quickly occupants exit, how much smoke fills the home, and whether working alarms provide early warning. Closed doors may slow the spread of heat and smoke in some parts of a building. Clear escape routes and practiced evacuation plans can also help residents leave more quickly when conditions change without warning.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
