Frequently Asked Questions
Does the condition of the road surface matter in motorcycle crashes?
Yes. Loose gravel, potholes, wet pavement, and painted lane markings can all reduce a motorcycle's traction far more than they affect a car, making road surface a bigger factor in rider safety than for other vehicles.
What gear helps protect a motorcyclist in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited by safety agencies as reducing the severity of head, road rash, and limb injuries in a crash.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?
Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelts around them, so a collision that a car occupant might walk away from can throw a motorcyclist from the bike or into another vehicle, leading to more severe injuries.
