Pike County, OH (June 16, 2026) – A woman and two children lost their lives, while another child suffered life-threatening injuries, following a collision involving an SUV and a semi-truck Monday afternoon, June 13, in Pike County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:56 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 32 and Coal Dock Road in Union Township.

Preliminary findings indicate that a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling north on Coal Dock Road and attempted to continue across State Route 32. Investigators said the SUV failed to yield and was struck by a westbound semi-truck hauling an empty logging trailer.

The driver of the Traverse and two of the vehicle’s three passengers suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified the victims as Hannah N. Howard, 30, Gunner Howard, 9, and Peyton Howard, all of Beaver, Ohio.

A fourth occupant, a 4-year-old child, sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was airlifted by MedFlight to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the collision.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, Stockdale Fire Department, Beaver Fire Department, Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service, the Pike County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and additional emergency response personnel.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Hannah, Gunner, and Peyton Howard. We also hope the injured child makes a full recovery.

Why Rural Highway Intersection Crashes Can Be Especially Severe?

Collisions involving passenger vehicles and semi-trucks result in catastrophic injuries due to the substantial difference in size and weight between the vehicles. When impacts occur at highway speeds, the forces involved can cause severe damage and increase the likelihood of fatal outcomes.

Investigators reviewing intersection crashes typically examine right-of-way issues, vehicle speeds, visibility conditions, roadway design, and witness statements. Evidence collected at the scene helps authorities determine the sequence of events and identify contributing factors.

Highway intersections in rural areas can present unique challenges because vehicles may approach at higher speeds and crossing traffic must accurately judge gaps in traffic. Understanding how these crashes occur can assist officials in identifying potential safety improvements and preventing similar tragedies.
