Candia, NH (July 20, 2026) – Three people lost their lives, and two others were injured following a multi-vehicle head-on collision on Saturday on Route 101 in Candia. Emergency crews responded to the scene after a Toyota Tundra, Nissan Sentra, and Jeep Grand Cherokee were involved in the crash.
According to the New Hampshire State Police, the Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it sideswiped a Nissan Sentra. The pickup then struck a guardrail before crossing the center line and colliding head-on with a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling in the opposite direction.
The drivers of both the Toyota and the Jeep died from their injuries. A passenger in the Jeep was transported to Elliot Hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the three people who died.
The two occupants of the Nissan, identified as 57-year-old Timothy McMahon and 18-year-old Kelly McMahon of Peterborough, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a precaution.
Both directions of Route 101 were affected by the collision. The eastbound lanes reopened shortly after the crash, while the westbound lanes remained closed for about four hours as investigators processed the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the state police said speed appears to have been a contributing factor. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the New Hampshire State Police.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and wish the injured a full recovery.
Why High-Speed Cross-Over Crashes Are Catastrophic?
Cross-over collisions can occur when a vehicle leaves its lane and enters opposing traffic, resulting in head-on impacts at combined highway speeds. These crashes are among the most severe types of roadway accidents because of the tremendous forces involved.
Investigators typically examine skid marks, vehicle damage, guardrail impacts, debris patterns, and electronic data from the vehicles to reconstruct the sequence of events. Witness statements and any available video footage may also help determine how the collision unfolded.
When speed is believed to be a factor, investigators evaluate whether it affected a driver’s ability to maintain control or avoid hazards. Their findings help establish the cause of the crash and may contribute to future roadway safety recommendations.
