Why Highways Are Often Closed for Hours After Serious Crashes
Major roadway closures can last for several hours after a deadly crash because crews must safely clear vehicles, debris, and damaged property before traffic can resume. In many cases, investigators also examine tire marks, vehicle positions, and roadway conditions to better understand how the wreck occurred.
Long closures are more common on highways and rural roads with limited alternate routes. Traffic backups may continue even after lanes reopen, especially when heavy equipment is needed to remove damaged vehicles. Medical transport activity and cleanup efforts can also extend the shutdown period. Early reports released after serious crashes often include only limited details while additional information is gathered and verified over time.
