How Tire Failures Can Contribute to Serious Highway Collisions
A tire failure can significantly affect a driver’s ability to maintain control of a vehicle, especially at highway speeds. When a tire suddenly loses pressure or breaks apart, steering and stability may become difficult, increasing the risk of crossing lanes or leaving the roadway.
Large vehicles such as dump trucks can present additional challenges because of their size and weight. A sudden loss of control may require more distance and time to correct. Factors that can contribute to tire failures include excessive wear, road hazards, improper inflation, and mechanical issues.
After a major roadway collision involving a suspected tire problem, investigators often examine the damaged tire, vehicle maintenance records, and roadway evidence. These findings can help determine whether a mechanical failure played a role in the sequence of events that led to the crash.
