TOLEDO, Lucas County, Ohio, Sept. 20, 2026 — A pedestrian riding an electric scooter died early on Sunday morning, September 20, after a driver struck the scooter on Main Street in Toledo and left the scene, authorities said. The Toledo Police Department is investigating the crash as a hit-and-run.

Police said the crash happened around 1:16 a.m. near 310 Main Street. According to the report, the scooter rider was traveling south on Main Street when a vehicle also headed south struck the scooter from behind, throwing the rider into the roadway.

The striking vehicle then veered off the road, went over the curb, and hit a utility pole and a retaining wall. Police officers said the driver appeared to see the victim before driving away.

The scooter rider was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. No arrests or charges had been announced as of Sunday, and police have not released the victim's identity.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Toledo Police Department.

Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

When Pedestrian Crashes Are Most Likely to Turn Deadly

Fatal pedestrian crashes cluster in the early morning and nighttime hours, when roads are dark, and drivers may not see someone walking or riding a scooter until it's too late. Streetlights don't always cover entire blocks, and low-light conditions reduce the distance a driver has to react.

Weekend overnight hours bring their own mix of risk. Bars and restaurants close, foot and scooter traffic picks up on otherwise quiet streets, and impaired or fatigued driving becomes more common. A tired or drunk driver reacts more slowly and is more likely to leave the scene rather than stop.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 24 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were struck by hit-and-run drivers in 2023. That figure reflects how often a driver's decision to flee, not just the initial impact, shapes the outcome for the victim and the case that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What usually causes pedestrian crashes?

Common factors include drivers failing to yield, low visibility at night, speeding, distracted driving, and impairment. Pedestrians on scooters or bikes can be harder for drivers to spot than someone walking.

Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chance of survival?

Yes. Survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases at the moment of impact. Even a difference of 10 mph can determine whether injuries are survivable.

Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?

A large share of pedestrian deaths happens at night, when drivers have less time to see and react to someone in or near the roadway, especially on streets without good lighting.

Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?

Many occur on city streets and at intersections, particularly where traffic moves at higher speeds or where crosswalks and lighting are limited.
