Daytona Beach Shores, FL (June 2, 2026) – A toll booth attendant was killed Monday afternoon after a pickup truck struck a beach access toll booth on Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores. The fatal collision occurred shortly before 1 p.m.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Dunlawton Avenue when it crashed into the toll booth staffed by 62-year-old Tammie Jo Baker, an employee of the county’s parking operations contractor. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the force of the collision crushed the booth and flipped it around. Baker died as a result of her injuries.
Investigators identified the driver as 35-year-old Deanna Harrell of Ormond Beach. Sheriff Chitwood said Harrell allegedly attempted to leave the area following the collision. She was later taken into custody under Florida’s Baker Act. Investigators also reported that impairment testing was conducted, and the sheriff stated that alcohol could be smelled inside the vehicle.
The Dunlawton beach access ramp remained closed while investigators processed the crash site and gathered evidence. The circumstances surrounding the collision continue to be examined. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Tammie Jo Baker.
What Information Is Typically Reviewed After a Vehicle Strikes a Roadside Structure?
When a vehicle leaves its intended travel path and strikes a roadside structure, investigators often examine several factors to determine how the collision occurred. These may include vehicle speed, driver actions, roadway conditions, visibility, and any signs of impairment or distraction.
Physical evidence, such as tire marks, vehicle damage, and the vehicle’s final resting position, can help reconstruct the sequence of events. Investigators may also review surveillance footage, witness accounts, and data recorded by the vehicle. When a fixed structure is involved, the extent and pattern of damage can provide valuable insight into the force and angle of the collision. These findings help clarify the circumstances that led to the fatal outcome.
