How Overturned Tractor-Trailers Can Affect Highway Safety
Large commercial trucks require more space to maneuver and stop than passenger vehicles. When a tractor-trailer overturns, it can create major traffic disruptions because of its size, weight, and the amount of roadway it occupies.
Several factors may contribute to a rollover involving a commercial truck, including shifting cargo, sudden steering movements, roadway design, weather conditions, or interactions with surrounding traffic. After a truck overturns, blocked lanes can increase congestion and raise the risk of secondary traffic emergencies nearby.
Investigators often review vehicle positioning, roadway conditions, witness accounts, and physical evidence to determine how a rollover occurred. Information gathered during these reviews can help identify contributing factors and improve highway safety measures for both commercial drivers and other motorists.
