Farmington, NY (May 29, 2026) – One person was seriously injured Friday morning after three tractor-trailers were involved in a crash on the New York State Thruway in Ontario County.
The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 between Hook Road and County Road 8 in Farmington. New York State Police said three tractor-trailers were involved in the collision.
One driver was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. No additional medical details were released in the initial report.
Eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 44 for several hours, causing a long backup on Route 96 between Farmington and Manchester. Drivers were able to re-enter the Thruway at Exit 43.
Heavy tow crews responded to remove the damaged vehicles. The diversion was lifted around 10:15 a.m., though the right lane remained closed while recovery and cleanup continued.
The cause of the crash remains under review. We hope the injured driver receives steady care and support during recovery.
Why Tractor-Trailer Crashes Can Cause Long Closures
Tractor-trailer crashes can take hours to clear because the vehicles are large, heavy, and often require specialized tow equipment. When several trucks are involved, debris and damaged equipment may block multiple lanes and create hazards for other drivers.
Medical teams may check injured drivers for head, neck, back, chest, and limb injuries after a heavy collision. Investigators may review lane position, speed, road conditions, traffic flow, vehicle damage, and driver statements to understand how the crash happened. Long diversions are common when cleanup crews need time to safely remove trucks and reopen the roadway.
