Overturned Truck Crashes Can Cause Long Freeway Delays
When a large truck overturns on a freeway, traffic can slow quickly because the vehicle may block lanes, the shoulder, or the median. Drivers approaching the crash may need to merge with little warning, which can create long backups.
Freeway delays can also grow when traffic in both directions slows to look at the crash or react to emergency activity nearby. Even lanes that are not fully blocked may move slowly because drivers reduce speed near damaged vehicles and debris.
An overturned truck can take extra time to clear because towing and recovery may require special equipment. Crews may also need to check for spilled cargo, vehicle fluids, or unsafe road conditions before traffic returns to normal.
