FAIRVIEW, Tucson County, Ariz., Oct. 7, 2026 — A pedestrian died Monday night, October 5, after being struck by an SUV near W Miracle Mile and N Fairview Ave in Tucson, according to the Tucson Police Department.
The man died at the scene, police said. The driver of the Buick SUV involved was not hurt and stayed at the location after the crash.
Detectives said the SUV was headed west on W Miracle Mile in the curb lane when the victim was crossing the road from north to south. Investigators have not said whether he was in a marked crosswalk at the time.
Police said the driver showed no signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs. No arrests or citations had been announced as of this report, and the Tucson Police Department said the case remains under investigation.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.
When Pedestrian Crashes Are Most Likely to Turn Deadly
Pedestrian deaths cluster around the hours when daylight fades and traffic is still heavy, roughly between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Drivers are tired from the day, headlights create glare instead of clear visibility, and a person crossing mid block or outside a crosswalk can be hard to see until seconds before impact.
Weekday evenings carry their own risk because commuter traffic moves fast and steadily, with drivers focused on reaching home. Weekend nights add a different factor: later activity, more foot traffic near bars and events, and a higher chance a driver or pedestrian has been drinking.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023. Dense city corridors like Tucson's Miracle Mile mix multiple lanes of through traffic with pedestrians crossing on foot, a combination that raises the odds of a serious or fatal collision when visibility drops.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a car?
Call 911 right away, stay as still as possible until medical help arrives, and avoid moving an injured limb or your neck. Get the names of any witnesses and ask responding officers how to obtain a copy of the police report once it's filed.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In Arizona, pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk generally have the right of way, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching traffic and crossing safely.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian crashes?
Broken bones, head and brain injuries, and spinal damage are common because a pedestrian has no protection from a vehicle's impact. Injuries can range from bruising to life-threatening trauma depending on the vehicle's speed.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Fairview, AZ
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until officers arrive. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries like concussions or internal bleeding aren't obvious right away.
It helps to write down what you remember as soon as possible, including where you were walking or driving and anything unusual about lighting or traffic. Remember to request a copy of the police report once available, and follow up with your own doctor if new symptoms appear in the days after the crash.
