When Pedestrian Crashes Near Crowded Events Are Most Likely
Pedestrian crashes outside fairs, festivals, and other large gatherings tend to cluster in the evening and at night, when foot traffic is heaviest and darkness reduces visibility. Crosswalks that handle a steady flow of pedestrians during the day can become harder to see at night, especially with headlights, event lighting, and crowds competing for a driver's attention.
Weekend nights add another factor: more vehicles moving through nearby streets at the same time large crowds are arriving or leaving. Drivers searching for parking or distracted by signage and foot traffic may be slower to notice someone stepping or running into a crosswalk.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2023. Many of those crashes, like pedestrian crashes generally, were concentrated in the evening hours, when drivers and people on foot share the same stretches of road with less light to work with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility after dark is one of the biggest factors in pedestrian crashes, along with higher traffic volume during evening hours.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Seek medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor, and make sure a police report is filed documenting the crash.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, but drivers and pedestrians both carry a responsibility to watch for each other and avoid sudden movements into traffic.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Tulsa, OK
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so injuries can be evaluated on scene. Even injuries that seem minor at first, such as bumps or soreness, can turn out to be more serious once examined by a doctor.
It helps to get the names and contact information of any witnesses before they leave, since their accounts can matter later in an investigation. Families dealing with a child's injury should also keep copies of medical records and any paperwork from responding officers, as these can be useful if questions come up about the crash down the road.
