Linden, NC (August 17, 2026) – A man and woman were critically injured on Saturday, August 15, in a house fire in the 8400 block of Colliers Chapel Church Road, about two miles south of Linden. The fire was reported at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Crews arrived to find smoke coming from a double-wide mobile home and flames along an exterior wall. The man was located in a front bedroom, while the woman was found in the center of the home.
Both residents were removed and flown by separate medical helicopters to the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill. They were reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Extreme heat also affected crews working at the property. Three firefighters and three medical personnel were taken for treatment of heat-related illness, prompting additional staffing during the response. Crews remained at the property checking hot spots until about 3:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under review.

Why Hot Weather Can Complicate Fire Operations
Fire crews already work in heavy protective gear that traps body heat while shielding them from flames and smoke. High outdoor temperatures can make it harder for the body to cool itself during extended operations.
Heat exhaustion may cause dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, or confusion. More severe heat illness can become dangerous if body temperature continues to rise without rest, hydration, and cooling.
Long fire operations may require rotating crews so workers can recover before returning to duty. Shade, fluids, medical monitoring, and additional staffing can all become especially important when a residential fire occurs during extreme summer heat.
