Cleveland, OH (July 21, 2026) – Two people were critically injured Sunday, July 19, when a car turning left onto Cedar Avenue from East 105th Street collided head-on with a southbound Cadillac SRX, according to Cleveland police. The 58-year-old driver was headed to the hospital with his 59-year-old passenger when the vehicles collided; both men were critically hurt, and their names have not been released.
The Cadillac’s 70-year-old driver was treated and released, while her 62-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries.
The wreck remains under investigation. We hope all four have a full recovery.
Why Are Left Turns at Busy Intersections So Dangerous?
A left turn asks a driver to judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic in just a few seconds, leaving very little room for error. When that judgment is off, even slightly, the result can be a head-on or near head-on collision, since the turning vehicle crosses directly into the opposing lane.
Visibility plays a major role in these situations. Parked cars, other traffic, or poor lighting can make it harder to see an approaching vehicle until it’s very close. Wider roads with multiple lanes can increase the difficulty, as a driver must account for more than one lane of oncoming traffic at once.
Dedicated turn signals at busy intersections are one way cities try to reduce this risk, giving turning drivers a protected window without oncoming traffic. Where those signals aren’t in place, drivers are advised to wait for a clear, unmistakable gap rather than a tight one.
