Why Head-on Highway Collisions Are Often So Severe
Head-on roadway crashes are among the most serious types of traffic emergencies because both vehicles may be moving toward one another at the same time. The combined force created during contact can greatly increase the likelihood of life-threatening harm.
Many of these collisions occur when a driver enters an opposing lane while attempting to pass another vehicle or while making an unsafe maneuver. On rural highways, higher travel speeds and limited opportunities to recover can make outcomes even more severe. Investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway markings, weather, visibility, and witness statements to help determine how the sequence of events unfolded. Safety experts encourage drivers to pass only when legal and when they have a clear view of oncoming traffic and sufficient distance to complete the maneuver safely.
