Why UTV Roadway Departure Crashes Can Become Severe
UTVs are designed for a variety of terrain conditions, but roadway departures can still lead to deadly outcomes, especially when speed or impaired driving is involved. Sharp curves and rural roads may reduce the amount of time drivers have to react if a vehicle begins to drift or lose control.
Investigators reviewing UTV crashes often examine tire marks, roadway shape, and vehicle damage to determine how the vehicle left the travel lane. Passenger movement and rollover dynamics may also play a role in the severity of injuries during these crashes.
Because UTVs are smaller and lighter than many passenger vehicles, sudden steering changes or excessive speed can increase instability. Safety practices such as sober driving and cautious speeds are often emphasized to help reduce the risk of serious rural roadway crashes.
