Why Wrong-Way Highway Travel Often Leads to Severe Outcomes
Wrong-way highway travel is especially dangerous because vehicles may meet each other head-on at high speeds. Drivers often have very little time to react, especially during overnight hours when traffic is lighter and visibility can be reduced.
These crashes often cause major harm because the force is concentrated at the front of both vehicles. Seat belts can help reduce movement inside the cabin, but they cannot prevent every serious injury when two vehicles meet from opposite directions.
Lighting, ramp design, road signs, driver awareness, and traffic flow can all affect how quickly a wrong-way movement is noticed. In many cases, the early facts focus on vehicle paths, travel direction, and the time the roadway contact happened.
