Head-On Collisions Carry a High Risk of Severe Harm

Head-on roadway encounters can expose occupants to strong forces because two vehicles may be moving toward each other before contact. The rapid change in speed can place heavy stress on the head, chest, spine, and lower body.

Seat belts, airbags, vehicle structure, and speed can influence how much energy reaches each occupant. Seating position also matters, especially when passengers are close to the point where the vehicles meet.

Serious trauma may require advanced hospital care or helicopter transfer when rapid treatment is needed. Older adults can face additional risks because bones and internal organs may be more vulnerable to sudden force. Road width, lane position, and visibility can also affect how much time drivers have to react before an opposing vehicle enters their path.
