Tyler, TX (September 3, 2026) – Two residents were taken to a hospital after a fast-moving fire on Tuesday, September 1, at Laurel Flats in Tyler. A 27-year-old woman entered the building to help a 67-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair, according to the report.
Both women were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. A 37-year-old man, identified as the wheelchair user’s son, was also inside the apartment but declined medical treatment.
Emergency units were dispatched around 10:24 a.m. and arrived three minutes later to find heavy smoke coming from the building in the 1200 block of E Houston St. The flames were contained before spreading to neighboring apartments.
Investigators believe a malfunctioning power strip may have started the fire after finding burn marks near an electrical panel on the wall. Neighbor Devin Pinkerton said he saw smoke throughout the building after noticing emergency vehicles nearby. The investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
We hope those hospitalized make a full and speedy recovery.
What Can Cause Electrical Fires in Apartment Buildings?
Electrical fires can start when power strips, outlets, wiring, or electrical panels become overloaded or damaged. Warning signs can include burning smells, scorch marks, buzzing sounds, flickering lights, or outlets that feel unusually warm.
Using power strips within their rated capacity can reduce the risk of overheating. Large appliances should generally be connected directly to suitable wall outlets rather than overloaded extension cords or power strips.
Residents should also avoid using damaged cords and should replace equipment showing signs of melting, discoloration, or exposed wiring. Smoke alarms should be installed throughout an apartment and tested regularly. Everyone in a household should know at least two ways to leave the building safely if smoke or fire develops. Never use an elevator during a fire, and move outside rather than returning indoors for personal belongings.
