Why Air Medical Transport May Be Used After Serious Highway Injuries
Air medical helicopters are often used when someone has severe trauma or needs faster access to specialized treatment. In many cases, flight crews are called when ground travel would take too long or when the nearest trauma center is several miles away. Medical teams on board can begin advanced care en route to the hospital.
People trapped inside vehicles may face added risks because rescue efforts can delay treatment. Chest injuries, head trauma, and internal bleeding are among the concerns that can lead doctors to request rapid transport. Weather, traffic, and road access may also affect whether a helicopter is used.
Hospitals with trauma centers are equipped to handle serious injuries that require surgery, imaging, or close monitoring shortly after a person arrives for care.
