Oroville, CA (May 24, 2026) – Two drivers were hospitalized Saturday afternoon, May 23, after a head-on accident on State Route 162 near Oroville.
The collision happened at about 2:56 p.m. near Wally B Lane. The California Highway Patrol said a Dodge pickup truck and a Toyota SUV had major front-end damage after the wreck.
The Dodge driver, who was the only person in the pickup, had moderate to major injuries. The woman driving the Toyota became trapped inside her SUV and had to be freed before she could be taken for care.
The Toyota driver was flown to a local hospital with major injuries and was listed as stable. The Dodge driver was also taken to a hospital with major injuries and was reported stable.
Investigators said the Dodge was traveling west on State Route 162 when it crossed into the opposing lane for reasons still being reviewed.
Both drivers then tried to avoid contact before the vehicles met head-on.
We hope both injured drivers receive steady care and support during recovery.
Why Head-On Roadway Accidents Can Cause Major Injuries
Head-on roadway accidents can be severe because the front of each vehicle absorbs a strong force at the same time. Drivers may be pushed into seat belts, airbags, steering wheels, dashboards, or doors. This can lead to head, chest, leg, hip, and back trauma.
When someone becomes trapped, rescue crews may need to remove parts of the vehicle to reach the patient safely. Medical teams may choose air transport when a patient needs faster access to advanced trauma care. Lane position, vehicle speed, road shape, steering actions, and final resting points can help explain how the vehicles came together and why both drivers needed hospital treatment.
