Norwalk, CT (June 15, 2026) – Two people were hurt on Saturday afternoon, June 13, after a house fire on Ely Avenue in Norwalk.
Emergency units were called to a multi-family home on Ely Avenue around 4:22 p.m. Reports said heavy flames were visible along the side and back of the building, with smoke found on every floor.
Before crews arrived, a 14-year-old girl escaped by jumping from a second-floor window. She was brought to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Her mother was helped out of the building by a neighbor using a ladder before emergency units reached the home. A dog was rescued from the first floor, and another dog escaped with occupants before help arrived.
Two members of the fire crew were evaluated for heat-related exhaustion. One was brought to Norwalk Hospital for treatment. Further details about the fire were not immediately available, but the cause remains under review as investigators continue checking what started the flames.
We hope everyone hurt in this house fire recovers fully.
How Heat and Smoke Can Increase Risks During a Home Fire
A home fire can become dangerous within minutes because smoke usually spreads faster than flames. Smoke can move through hallways, stairwells, and upper floors, making it harder for occupants to leave safely.
Second-floor escapes may carry added risk when stairs are blocked or smoke-filled. Jumping from a window can lead to serious harm, even when it is done to get away from heat and smoke.
Emergency workers also face health risks while working near intense heat. Heat exhaustion can happen when the body overheats during strenuous work, especially while wearing heavy protective gear. Symptoms may include weakness, dizziness, and confusion. Quick evaluation and cooling measures can help prevent more serious heat illness.
