What Happens to the Body During a Chemical Explosion Injury?
Explosions involving pool chemicals can cause several types of harm at once. The blast itself can damage hearing and put pressure on the lungs, even when a person is not directly in the path of the fire. Pool chemicals often contain chlorine-based compounds, which release toxic gases when burned or mixed incorrectly. Breathing in those gases, even briefly, can irritate the airways and cause lasting respiratory problems.
Burns from chemical fires tend to penetrate more deeply than burns from ordinary heat. Skin and eye contact with these compounds can cause serious damage that may not be immediately visible. People who appear stable after a chemical explosion may still need close medical monitoring in the hours and days that follow.
