St. Louis, MO (June 26, 2026) – Two people were taken to hospitals following a traffic collision along northbound I-55 near the I-270/I-255 interchange on Wednesday, June 24.
The wreck happened at approximately 8:35 a.m. in the exit-only lanes for Interstate 270 and Interstate 255. Emergency units remained at the roadway for some time while the affected lanes were cleared and patients received medical attention.
By about 9:00 a.m., part of the exit-only lanes remained blocked while one person was taken to a hospital. A second ambulance later arrived, and by 9:20 a.m., both patients had been taken for treatment. Fire personnel had cleared the roadway by then, although the right lanes still had stop-and-go traffic extending back to Butler Hill Road.
No information about the extent of the injuries or the identities of those involved was released.
The cause of the collision has not yet been determined as the investigation continues.
We extend our best wishes to those receiving medical care and hope for their full recovery.
Why Lane Blockages Can Continue After Injured People Leave the Roadway
Traffic delays frequently remain even after people have been taken to hospitals. Cleanup crews may still need time to remove damaged vehicles, clear debris, inspect guardrails, and ensure the roadway is safe before every lane can reopen.
Congestion can also persist because traffic builds quickly while lanes are closed. Once vehicles begin moving again, it may take several miles before traffic returns to its normal flow. Drivers approaching these areas are often encouraged to reduce speed, leave extra following distance, and merge early when possible. These steps can improve safety for everyone using the roadway while remaining congestion gradually clears.
