Stephentown, NY (August 19, 2026) – Two people were injured after a van left State Rte 22 and struck multiple trees in Stephentown.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, August 18, when the van was traveling northeast and failed to remain in its lane. The vehicle then left the roadway and hit several trees.

The driver became trapped inside the van and was removed. The driver suffered serious injuries and was flown to Albany Medical Center.

A passenger also was injured and taken to a hospital by ambulance. The van sustained heavy front-end damage in the collision.

The circumstances surrounding the wreck remain under review as investigators examine what caused the van to leave the roadway. We hope both injured people make steady recoveries.

Why Can Crashes Involving Trees Cause Serious Injuries?

A vehicle leaving the roadway can face additional hazards when trees or other fixed objects are nearby. Unlike another vehicle, a tree does not move or absorb much of the force when struck.

Maintaining lane position is especially important on roads surrounded by trees. Drivers should reduce speed when roadway conditions or visibility make it harder to stay centered in their lane.

Fatigue, distraction, weather, and mechanical problems can all contribute to a vehicle leaving its intended path. Staying focused and maintaining an appropriate speed can give drivers more time to correct an unexpected movement.

Seat belts can help keep occupants secured during a sudden stop. Proper restraints may reduce the risk of being thrown inside a vehicle during a serious collision.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
