What Happens When Emergency Vehicles Are Involved in Traffic Crashes?
Crashes involving emergency vehicles often require a detailed review because these vehicles operate differently from standard passenger cars. Fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles are larger, heavier, and may be traveling in response to calls when a collision occurs.
Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, vehicle damage, traffic signals, and witness accounts to determine how the crash happened. Sideswipe collisions can occur when vehicles travel in adjacent lanes, and one vehicle moves into the path of another. Even when injuries are considered minor, emergency vehicle crashes can affect traffic flow and temporarily disrupt emergency operations while damaged equipment is inspected and repaired.
