Walnut, IA (July 23, 2026) – Two people were injured on Tuesday evening, July 21, when a motorcycle carrying both of them failed to negotiate a turn on Highway 83, also known as Pearl Street, on the west edge of Walnut, according to the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was airlifted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, while the passenger was taken by ambulance to Myrtue Medical Center. Neither injury is believed to be life-threatening.
The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Accident Investigations Team continues to investigate.

Why Are Turns Challenging for Motorcycles Carrying Two Riders?
Adding a passenger changes how a motorcycle handles, since the extra weight shifts the bike’s balance and how quickly it responds to steering input. A turn that a solo rider could take comfortably may require more careful speed control and lean angle when a passenger is on board.
Passengers also need to move with the bike through a turn rather than against it, since sudden or mistimed shifts in weight can throw off the rider’s balance. Without practice riding together, this coordination doesn’t always come naturally, especially at speed.
Road conditions like gravel, uneven pavement, or a sharper-than-expected curve can compound this difficulty, leaving less room for error when a bike is carrying extra weight. Riders are encouraged to reduce speed further than usual when carrying a passenger, particularly through turns on unfamiliar roads.
