Wheeling, WV (May 27, 2026) – Two people were hurt Tuesday morning following a three-vehicle wreck that shut down Interstate 470 West near the Veterans Memorial Bridge for more than an hour. Traffic backups stretched into West Virginia as crews worked to clear the roadway.
According to transportation officials, the collision happened around 8 a.m. just past the bridge on I-470 West. Published reports stated that two semi trucks and a pickup were involved. Two people from the crash were taken to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital for treatment.
All westbound lanes remained closed until shortly before 10 a.m., when one lane reopened to traffic. Congestion continued for several hours, with backups extending near the Bethlehem exit. The remaining lanes reopened shortly before 2 p.m. Further details about the people involved had not been released on Tuesday evening.
The cause of the highway collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering information. We are thinking of those injured and hope for their recovery.
Why Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes Often Cause Long Delays
Crashes involving several large vehicles can create major traffic problems, especially on busy interstate routes and bridge connections. Semi trucks require more stopping distance than smaller vehicles, and blocked travel lanes can quickly lead to backups stretching for miles. Even after injured people are taken from the roadway, cleanup work may continue for hours.
Heavy-duty towing equipment is often needed to move damaged trucks safely. Fuel spills, cargo shifts, and debris scattered across multiple lanes can also slow reopening efforts. Bridge routes and interstate connectors are particularly sensitive to closures because drivers may have few alternate travel options nearby. During long shutdowns, traffic can spread onto local streets and nearby exits, increasing congestion well beyond the original roadway blockage.
