Albany, GA (August 14, 2026) – Two people died, and five others were injured on Wednesday after a 15-passenger van left Wildfair Road and struck a tree in Dougherty County.

The accident happened around 4:45 p.m. in the 2200 block of Wildfair Road, near Hard Up Road and County Line Road. All seven occupants of the van were Cuban nationals, according to officials.

The two people seated in the front of the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names and ages were not released.

Four surviving occupants were taken to a local hospital. One had critical injuries, while three others had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The fifth surviving occupant exited the van with injuries that were not considered serious. Before emergency units arrived, he helped another person get out of the vehicle.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

Our condolences go to the families of those who died, and we hope those injured make steady recoveries.

What Happens When a Vehicle Leaves the Roadway?

A vehicle leaving the roadway can create serious hazards when it strikes a fixed object such as a tree, utility pole, barrier, or building. Injury severity can depend on vehicle speed, the angle of impact, restraint use, and occupant seating position.

Passenger vans can carry more people than standard passenger vehicles, which means a single roadway accident can affect many occupants. Proper seatbelt use helps keep passengers secured and may reduce the risk of being thrown from a vehicle.

After a serious collision, medical teams may evaluate each person separately because injuries can vary widely among occupants. Some injuries may require immediate specialized treatment, while others may initially appear less severe and require additional evaluation.
