Why Wrong-Way Crashes Require Detailed Investigations?
Wrong-way collisions frequently result in severe impacts because the vehicles are traveling toward one another at highway speeds. Investigators typically examine the path each vehicle traveled, roadway markings, traffic control devices, and physical evidence to determine how a vehicle entered opposing traffic. Early reports may provide only limited details while the investigation is underway.
Additional evidence, such as vehicle damage, debris patterns, tire marks, and witness statements, can help reconstruct the sequence of events. Investigators may also review roadway design, visibility, and other contributing factors to develop a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the collision. These findings help explain how the crash occurred and may inform future roadway safety efforts.
