Indianapolis, IN (August 5, 2026) – Two men died, and three others were hospitalized after an SUV ran a red light and struck a car heading east on 86th Street at the intersection with Meridian Street early on Wednesday morning, according to the Indianapolis police. The crash was reported just before 3 a.m.

The car’s driver, 32-year-old Forrest Coffee Jr., and a passenger in the SUV, 24-year-old Dashawn Williams, were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other men riding in the SUV were taken to hospitals; two were in critical condition, and the third was listed as stable. The investigation remains ongoing.

Our condolences go out to both men’s families and loved ones.

Why May Red-Light Crashes Result in Multiple Fatalities?

When a vehicle runs a red light at highway speed and strikes another vehicle broadside, the force involved is much greater than in a typical rear-end or low-speed collision. Occupants on the side closest to the point of impact tend to face the greatest risk, regardless of which vehicle they were riding in.

A vehicle carrying multiple passengers, like an SUV, can see injuries spread across several people rather than concentrated on a single driver. This is part of why a single red-light violation can result in harm to more than one person, even when only one vehicle was at fault.

Investigators typically examine signal timing, vehicle speeds, and points of impact to reconstruct exactly how a crash like this unfolded. This kind of detail helps establish not just what happened, but how a split-second decision at an intersection led to such a serious outcome for everyone involved.
