Silver Springs, NV (July 27, 2026) – Two people were seriously injured on Saturday, July 25, when their SUV rolled over on U.S. 50 near the 3-mile marker in Churchill County, close to the North Shore Marina at Lahontan Reservoir, according to the Nevada State Police. Both occupants were taken to a hospital, one by medical helicopter and the other by ground ambulance.

Troopers are investigating the rollover. Intermittent closures of US-50 were expected while the investigation continued and crews cleared the roadway.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible and expect delays. No further details on the cause or the occupants’ identities had been released as of this report.

We hope both have a full recovery.

Why Do Rollovers Happen on Rural Highways?

Rural highways combine higher speed limits with curves, uneven shoulders, and less predictable road conditions than a typical city street. These factors can make it easier for a vehicle to leave its lane suddenly, especially if a driver overcorrects after drifting toward the shoulder.

SUVs and taller vehicles are generally more prone to tipping than lower passenger cars, since their higher center of gravity makes sudden shifts in direction riskier. A quick swerve to avoid an animal, pothole, or oncoming vehicle can be enough to unbalance a taller vehicle at highway speed.

Because rural stretches have fewer nearby resources, clearing a scene and completing an investigation can take longer than in an urban area. This is part of why officials sometimes rely on intermittent closures rather than a single continuous shutdown, allowing some traffic through while crews and investigators do their work.
