How Can Severe Highway Crashes Affect Traffic?
Serious highway crashes can cause significant traffic disruptions, particularly when emergency crews need space to treat and evacuate injured people. Lanes may be closed to create a safe area for emergency vehicles, medical helicopters, and other response equipment.
Traffic backups can extend beyond the immediate crash site when multiple lanes are blocked. Drivers approaching the area may encounter sudden slowdowns or stopped traffic as crews work at the scene.
Weather can also make highway travel more difficult. Heavy rain may reduce visibility, create wet pavement, and increase the risk of losing control. Drivers should reduce speed when conditions change and allow additional space between vehicles.
