Elk Grove, CA (September 7, 2026) – A green Toyota and a gray Hyundai sedan were involved in a wreck with minor injuries on northbound SR-99 near Laguna Boulevard Saturday, September 5, according to dispatch logs. One vehicle struck the rear of a truck in the fast lane; the driver of that truck initially left the area before returning to the scene. The involved party declined medical evaluation.
A tow was requested to help clear the roadway.
Details about the extent of the injuries were not immediately available. We hope both drivers have a full recovery.
Why Might a Driver Involved in a Crash Temporarily Leave the Scene and Then Return?
Not every driver who leaves a crash scene briefly is attempting to flee responsibility. Someone may pull ahead to reach a safer spot to stop, especially on a busy freeway where stopping in an active lane isn’t safe, then circle back once they’ve found a place to park.
Confusion or shock in the moments right after a crash can also affect a driver’s immediate decisions, sometimes leading them to continue briefly before realizing they need to return and address what happened. This differs from a deliberate hit-and-run, where a driver has no intention of coming back at all.
Investigators typically consider the full context, including how quickly someone returns and their explanation for leaving, when determining whether a departure was reasonable or requires further scrutiny. This distinction matters for how a crash is ultimately classified and handled.
