Port Arthur, TX (May 25, 2026) – Two women were taken to the hospital on Sunday morning following a fire at the Heatherbrook Park apartments in Port Arthur. One was seriously hurt with burns, and the other experienced minor smoke inhalation.
Both were initially taken to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, but the woman with burns was later flown by air rescue to Memorial Hermann Hospital for additional care. Their current status was not known at the time of this report.
The two women were able to get out of the apartment on their own before emergency units arrived. Only one unit caught fire, though nearby apartments may have sustained smoke damage. The cause of the fire is still under review, and further findings are expected as the investigation moves forward.
We hope both women make a full recovery and are holding them in our thoughts.
What Typically Happens After a Residential Fire Injures Occupants in Texas
When a fire injures residents of an apartment complex, the path to recovery can be complicated. Burn injuries usually require specialized medical care that goes beyond what a standard emergency room can provide. That is why patients with serious burns are frequently transferred to facilities with dedicated burn units, where wound care, skin grafting, and long-term rehabilitation may all be part of treatment.
Smoke inhalation, even when considered minor at first, can affect the lungs in ways that are not immediately visible. Medical staff typically monitor those affected for respiratory issues in the hours following exposure. For those displaced by a fire, temporary housing and access to personal belongings can also become pressing concerns while the building is assessed for safety.
