Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur Outside Crosswalk Areas
Pedestrian accidents frequently occur on busy city roads where people sometimes cross outside marked intersections. When someone crosses mid-block, drivers may not expect to see a person in the travel lanes.
Many roadways are designed primarily for vehicle movement. Multiple lanes, steady traffic, and higher speeds can make it difficult for drivers to react quickly if a pedestrian steps into the roadway.
Visibility also affects how drivers and pedestrians see each other. At night or in low-light conditions, it may take a driver longer to notice someone crossing between intersections. Street lighting, vehicle headlights, and surrounding buildings can change how clearly a person is visible.
Crosswalks and signalized intersections are placed to guide foot traffic to areas where drivers are more likely to stop. Using these locations can reduce the chance of conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.
