Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur on local roads and at intersections, usually in areas with limited lighting or where drivers are turning and may not see someone crossing.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to spot people on foot, and a large share of pedestrian crashes happen in the evening or overnight hours.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay as still as you can until help arrives, and try to note details about the vehicle and driver. Even injuries that seem minor at first should be checked by a medical provider.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching for each other, especially at night or in bad weather.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Union Township, NJ
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away and avoid moving an injured person unless they're in immediate danger. If you're the one who was hit, seek medical evaluation even if you feel okay at first, since head injuries and internal injuries aren't always obvious right away. Try to get the names and contact information of any witnesses, and if the driver fled, note whatever details you can, like the vehicle's color, make, or direction of travel. Report the crash to local police and follow up with them for updates on the investigation. Keep records of any medical treatment and missed work, since those documents can matter later.
