Trenton, UT (June 21, 2026) – Five Utah State University student-athletes were injured in a crash involving an SUV and a semitrailer on SR-23 near Trenton.

Emergency units responded to the intersection of SR-23 and SR-142 at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Friday, June 19, after receiving reports of a serious collision. According to preliminary information, a group of Utah State students was traveling in a Chevrolet Tahoe after an outing at Newton Dam Reservoir.

Investigators reported that the intersection is controlled by stop signs on SR-142, while traffic on SR-23 has the right of way. Witnesses stated the Tahoe slowed and appeared to stop or nearly stop before entering the intersection in front of a southbound semitrailer driven by Steve Randall of Preston, Idaho. The semitrailer driver attempted to avoid the collision by swerving, but the truck struck the driver’s side of the SUV. The impact pushed the Tahoe approximately 75 yards into the front yard of a nearby residence.

Officials identified the injured occupants as current Utah State football players Adewale Adeoye, Edmund Faimalo, John Taylor, and Travis Seefeldt, along with former Utah State softball player Sarah Vasquez. Several of the injured victims were reported to be in critical condition. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

We wish the athletes a speedy recovery.

How Right-of-Way Intersections Are Evaluated After Serious Crashes

Intersections where one roadway is controlled by stop signs and another allows continuous traffic can present challenges for drivers. Determining when it is safe to enter or cross a roadway usually requires careful judgment regarding the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.

After a serious intersection collision, investigators typically review traffic controls, vehicle movements, roadway visibility, and witness statements. Physical evidence such as skid marks, debris, and vehicle damage can also help establish how the crash occurred.

Large commercial vehicles require greater distances to slow down or stop than passenger vehicles. Because of their size and weight, crashes involving semitrailers can result in significant damage and severe injuries. Reviewing roadway conditions and the actions of all drivers involved helps investigators develop a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the collision.
